Sarah’s Story

Sarah was always very active in sports and dance when she was younger and never thought she would be overweight. She never had a weight problem until the age of 32, when she got married. After being married for 2 years, she became pregnant. She said, “The weight just kept creeping on.”

By the time Sarah was 39 years old, she weighed 189 pounds and had a body mass index (BMI) of 32.5. Her weight inhibited her from participating in activities with her children. She also had occasional sleep apnea and high blood pressure. She decided to seek care from a bariatric surgeon at Roger Williams Medical Center.

Sarah’s bariatric surgeon recommended laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery as the best course of action for her to lose weight and regain a healthy lifestyle. After surgery, Sarah says her favorite part is that “you don’t feel hungry all the time.” She lost 93 pounds in the first year after surgery!

She has since become an avid runner and participates in races with her children. A year after surgery, Sarah ran her first half marathon. Her advice to others who are thinking about having weight loss surgery is to, “Do it! It’s life changing.”
