Weight Loss Surgery – Promising Longevity
Cared to lend an ear to the recent buzz surrounding weight loss surgery? If not, then you might be missing on something truly vital! According to a research conducted in the United States and Sweden, weight loss surgery is effectively linked to longevity. Speculations abound this issue but if evidence is to be believed, there is a strong possibility to live longer by reducing weight, intentionally or otherwise.
Obesity invites a lot of severe health troubles. Cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, diabetes, infertility, and cancer are amongst the few instances. Majority of Americans suffer either from heart diseases or hypertension. Hypertension is also known to be a silent killer, with the victim often unaware of what he is afflicted with. Coronary heart diseases, in most cases, have fatal implications. Causes of these risky ailments have often been pinpointed towards excessive weight gain or obesity. In fact, obesity can complicate certain ailments and thwart medical treatment. Herein crops up the necessity of intentional weight loss.
A study published in the Washington Post quotes, “The question as to whether intentional weight loss improves life span has been answered, the answer appears to be a resounding yes.”(Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge) Speaking of the research involving 20,000 obese people in the US and Sweden, those who underwent bariatric surgery had a 30 to 40 percent lower risk of premature mortality than those who didn’t. Lars Sjostrom of Goteborg University in Sweden performed bariatric surgery in 2,010 obese patients, while another group of 2,037 patients did not undergo any operation. Their studies suggest that those who had undergone surgery were 30 percent less likely to die from any health cause.
This is strong evidence to advocate the cause of intentional weight loss. The proportion of overweight people is increasing day by day, thus triggering multiple health problems. To make things worse, excessive weight gain is also associated with infertility, asthma, sleeping disorders, chronic pain, osteoarthritis, depression, and stroke. These ailments are more than enough to cut short a person’s life-span. So why not take recourse to weight loss surgery to get rid of these nagging issues?
With trusted evidence on its side, weight loss surgery is being regarded as one of the key elements against most fatal diseases. In other words, this surgery certainly promises a better healthier lifestyle and for a few- an elixir of life!
