Weight Loss – The Importance of Self-Awareness

How self-aware are you? If you were asked, what would you reply? Most people either don’t give self-awareness any thought and therefore find it difficult to give an accurate reply, and others think that they are perfectly self-aware when in fact they are very much the opposite. There is a third category and it belongs to those in denial. They avoid any thought or mention of self-awareness because they are aware of their short comings and don’t want to be reminded of them.

It’s a very sad fact that most of us live our lives on autopilot. In a way it makes a complicated and busy life easier to deal with. We allow ourselves to develop habits -many of them bad – in order to cope. In a lot of what we do we become automaton like, and life floats on by. We fail to notice what’s going on around us. We don’t notice very much at all, particularly about ourselves. Things just ‘happen’ in our lives. It is as if we become detached from reality. When occasionally we are made to confront the real world, or the world we have unknowingly created for ourselves, it makes us so unhappy that we usually crawl back into our shells and continue on as before.

The secret of successful weight loss, and permanent weight loss in particular, is self-awareness. The only way to lose weight permanently is to make personal change. If you are not aware of your bad habits and of what has to be changed, then the task is almost impossible.

Becoming more self-aware is not difficult. In very simple terms it is about ‘noticing’. If you start to notice more about yourself and what you do – and about others the effect you have on them and the way they react to you, you will slowly begin to build up your self -awareness. It may be a little alarming at first, but the more self-aware you become, the more self-confident you will feel. You will be in a far better position to take informed, responsible decisions about your health and your weight; to learn new slim habits and to ditch bad habits. Being able to lose weight and keep it off will very soon become a reality.
